Privacy Policy

This policy explains what data Built On Side (builtonside.com) collects, why, and what rights you have over it. Built On Side is operated by LevelSafety Oy (also registered as LevelSafety Ltd), Business ID 3169518-3, based in Kiiminki, Finland. That makes LevelSafety Oy the data controller for the purposes of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

What We Collect

  • Basic site analytics: page views, referring sites, approximate location (country/city level), device and browser type. This is collected automatically for anyone who visits the site, through our hosting provider's built-in analytics and/or a third-party analytics tool if one is added later.
  • Cookies: used for basic site functioning and, if analytics tools require them, to distinguish unique visitors. See the Cookies section below.
  • Anything you send us directly: if you email us, we receive whatever you include in that email (your address, name if given, and message content).
  • Newsletter/free sign-up: if you sign up for updates, we collect your email address (and name, if you provide one) to send you new articles. Sign-up is free, no payment information is collected. Emails are sent through Ghost's built-in newsletter system, which uses Mailgun as the delivery provider.

We do not currently offer paid membership tiers, run comments, or process any payments through this site.

Why We Collect It

  • To understand which content is useful and improve the site
  • To respond to emails sent to us
  • To meet basic legal and security obligations (fraud prevention, abuse prevention)

We do not sell your personal data to anyone, for any reason.

Cookies

The site may use cookies for core functionality and, if enabled, analytics. You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time. Doing so may affect some site functionality but won't prevent you from reading the content.

Third Parties

  • Hosting: the site runs on Ghost via DigitalPress, with images and assets served from DigitalOcean Spaces infrastructure.
  • Email delivery: if you sign up for updates, your email address is processed by Mailgun (Ghost's built-in email provider) solely to deliver those updates.
  • Affiliate links: some articles link to third-party offers we earn a commission from (see the Affiliate Disclosure page). Once you click through to a third-party site, that site's own privacy policy applies, not this one.

Your Rights

If you're in the EU/EEA, GDPR gives you the right to access, correct, delete, or export the personal data we hold about you, and to object to how it's processed. If you're elsewhere, we apply the same rights as a matter of practice, not just to EU residents.

Data Retention

We keep data only as long as it's needed for the purpose it was collected for. Emails are kept as long as reasonably useful for context on ongoing correspondence, then deleted.

Children's Privacy

This site isn't directed at children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from children.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the effective date above. Check back occasionally if you want to stay current.
