How to Become a Nano Influencer (Or Skip That Part Entirely)
Nano-influencer means something specific: a small but genuinely engaged following, usually under 10,000, valued by brands precisely because it's not a mega-account with mercenary engagement. If that's what brought you here, the appeal is obvious. You don't need millions of followers. You just need to start.
Here's the honest version of what that actually takes, and a second option worth knowing about if what you actually want is the "small and low barrier" part, not necessarily the "be the influencer yourself, forever" part.
What Becoming a Nano-Influencer Actually Involves
Pick a niche narrow enough that a small audience still means something to a brand: a specific hobby, or a specific corner of fitness or finance, not the broad category itself. Broad niches need scale to matter. Narrow ones don't.
Then it's consistency and real engagement, not virality. Reply to comments. Show up in a way that feels like a person, not a content calendar. Brands paying nano-influencer rates aren't buying reach, they're buying trust with a small, specific audience, and trust takes months to build honestly, not weeks.
Reaching out to brands yourself is usually how it starts, not waiting to be discovered. Modest asks: free product, a small flat fee, sometimes both. The money is not big at this tier. The reason people do it anyway is the low barrier to starting at all, no huge following required first.
If the Barrier Is the Point, Not the Camera
That low-barrier part is worth sitting with for a second. If what actually appeals to you is "I don't need to be big to start," rather than "I specifically want to be a personal-brand influencer," there's a second path worth knowing about.
I make AI-generated avatar videos myself. Not a fully fictional character: a consistent designed avatar drawing from my actual features, plus my own cloned voice, an ElevenLabs voice clone reading scripts while the avatar delivers them, so I'm not personally on camera for every single piece of content. Editing and delivery get handled by AI, the actual person behind the voice stays real. That's a genuinely different option from the fully fictional, faceless AI personas I've written about elsewhere in this cluster, and it might fit the "small and low barrier" instinct better than either the classic nano-influencer route or a completely anonymous AI persona.
Why "Small" Doesn't Stay a Limitation Here
The done-for-you AI Influencer model I actually recommend doesn't run on the same growth curve as traditional nano-influencer brand deals. Nano-influencer income tends to scale with your following: grow the audience, the rates and the brand interest tend to follow. It's a real ladder, and climbing it takes time.
The AI Influencer Portfolio model works differently. Content gets posted organically at first to find hooks that actually land, then paid traffic amplifies whatever's working. The funnel runs through a sales page and email opt-in, not through audience size. Staying small doesn't cap the ceiling the way it would for a traditional nano-influencer chasing bigger and bigger brand deals.
That's the honest version of "you don't have to grow past nano-influencer scale to make this work." Not because scale doesn't matter at all, it does for the traditional route, but because this specific model was never depending on it in the first place.
Where to Go From Here
If the real nano-influencer path still appeals, that's a legitimate one, and now you know what it actually takes instead of the version that skips straight to brand deal screenshots.
If it was really the "start small, low barrier" part that got you here, I've written about the fully faceless version of this elsewhere: what running an AI persona from scratch actually costs in time, the real tool stack behind AI avatar videos, and why "AI influencer" means at least three different businesses online, worth reading before assuming any of them are the same thing. And if avoiding the camera was never really your reason, here's the difference between not wanting to be seen and just not needing an audience.
If you'd rather see the done-for-you version directly, here's where I'll send you the details.
